On Sunday, 4/6, a group of over thirty volunteers gathered in the garden to prepare it for the planting season. Over the course of four hours, we were able to accomplish a tremendous amount of work:
All of the beds (and the pollinator border) were fertilized with compost and some additional fertilizers, and covered with two different kinds of nutrient-rich soil. This means the beds are ready to be planted by the various students and club members who use the garden.
The grape vines and apple trees, which were very overgrown, were pruned to a more manageable size. This also allowed the sun to reach some of our pollinator border plants which are often shaded out by the vines.
Our compost system was awoken from its hibernation, as some tumblers were emptied out, and soil was added underneath our newest tumbler to provide easier access for wheelbarrows in the future.
The chickens’ water system was set up, allowing two hens and a rooster to return.
The paths were resurfaced and weeded, making the garden look far nicer and removing the muddy mess many of us worked in earlier during the work day.
The pond was dredged and the water pump reinstalled to maintain a healthy dissolved oxygen level.
We would like to give a special shout out to Simona for picking up and organizing the various tools left out, and a big thank you to Stacey for providing the food!
Thank you also to Ms. Kanter for taking most of the wonderful photos on this page!
